What's the deal with summer sniffles?

Monday, June 26, 2017

  • A winter cold is usually caused by the highly adaptable rhinovirus, whilst its summer counterpart tends to be the result of the more vicious enterovirus. Along with the typical cold symptoms of congestion, sore throat and coughing, summer colds can also bring about symptoms more commonly associated with flu, such as fever, aching joints and an all-over fatigue. Diarrhoea and an upset stomach can also be a factor with the enterovirus which is why it’s a particularly nasty virus.
  • Good hand-washing is really important in preventing a summer cold – think before you dive into the communal crisp bowl at a BBQ for example! Picnic tables, airplanes and sporting events are all germ havens too – don’t avoid these, just get into the habit of washing your hands regularly to prevent the spread of the virus.
  • We all tend to burn the candle at both ends in the summer months which can weaken our immune system and increase the threat of the enterovirus taking hold. Poor sleep, an unhealthy diet and stress can result in a reduction of our defences, so getting to bed early, eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and incorporating some relaxation time will really help fight summer bugs.
Acupuncture is a great way to boost the immune system, reduce stress and prevent common illnesses like coughs, colds and flu. For more information please call 01323 819157. We have clinics in Polegate and Eastbourne.
